South Indian Sarees Biography

A saree (or sari) is a traditional Indian garment, worn in different styles across the country. Sarees from India have always epitomized the country’s culture and date back to the Indus Valley Civilization. The saree is draped by women from all strata of the society and ranges from daily wear to a fashion statement. Sarees from India are available in many different designs and almost every state in the country has a typical and unique style - from the Kanjivaram in Tamil Nadu to the Banarasi in Uttar Pradesh, from the Paithani in Maharashtra to the Ikkat in Orissa. Sarees have traditionally been made from silk or cotton. Sarees from India may be hand-woven or block-printed, and be embellished with gold or silver thread (also known as zari) or with precious stones or crystals. Stepping into a saree shop is like entering a wonderland of colors, designs and fabrics.
In the recent past, the traditional sari had made way for the comfortable salwar-kameez combination and western clothes, especially among young Indian women. However, it has had a revival lately, with the advent of the designer sari. Usually made from lighter (and manageable) fabrics such as crepe, chiffon and georgette, the designer sari is a bolder statement with strong colors and abstract prints. The traditional sari has been updated by well-known Indian designers such as Tarun Tahiliani and Satya Paul as well by international fashion houses such as Hermes and Louis Vuitton, leaving the fashionista spoiled for choice.
Though Indian fashion on the world map many times becomes synonymous with gorgeous Indian Sarees, day-to-day Indian fashion is still about comfort and current trends put together. And therefore, Salwars are becoming the more dominant style statement of current times. With the Indian fashion scene always getting influenced by Bollywood fashion, the current trends in Salwars also now show the Bollywood effect. Though chic and smart Churidars and Patiala suits still hold the ground as Indian women's daily wear, Anarkali suits have become the biggest fashion find and most preferred style statement of recent times.
Anarkali suits not only provide elegance and feminine appeal to the wearer, it perfectly combines the graceful silhouette of a skirt and the sensuous cut of an evening gown. Anarkali suits usually come in flowing materials, which allow the frock-like style (below the bodice) to have a free flow. The current crop of top Indian designers do not shy away from experimenting with varied fabrics and as a result Anarkali salwar suits now are designed around a beautiful array of crepes, georgettes, silks, cottons and brocades to get that perfect ethnic look. You match a crisp Churidar bottom and a grand Dupatta to any Anarkali Kurti and what you get is an eye-catcher for all occasions. Bollywood celebrities, with their recent appearances at major red carpet events in designer Anarkali suits, are majorly responsible for this Indian attire becoming the most sought after ethnic wear today.
