One of the most sensual attires of a woman in India is undoubtedly the sari. It is along unstitched piece of cloth, usually 6 yards long that is draped in a set pattern. It accentuates the curves of a woman and the mid-riff is usuallyexposed. However, the way of draping a saree may differ from place to place. The way it is draped in the north may be slightly different from how it is draped inthe south. It is available in a plethora of fibers, designs and colors. The sari isusually worn with a blouse that covers the upper part of the body andunderneath it is the petticoat, which helps to tuck in the pleats of the saree tohold it in place.
The saree (or sari), a traditional Indian garment worn by women of all ages and class, has evolved from century to century into various forms and styles. A sari literally means a strip of cloth in Sanskrit and the earliest known person to wear a sari was in 2800 BCE in the Indus Valley civilization.  Not only is the sari known to flatter a woman’s figure, giving her a beautiful hourglass figure, but also is appropriate to the warm climates of Western civilizations because of the airy fabric.
History of Saree
The exact origins of the sari are unknown because of poor record keeping in India. However, it is known that unsewn cloths that were draped around the body were worn before tailored cloths arrived described in texts such as Vedic Scripts, Mahabharata, Silappadhikaram, Kadambari and Natya Shastra. Tailored cloths arrived in India when Muslims came to India. Hindu’s however, believed that any cloth pricked with needles was impure. Furthermore, when the British came to India, Indian women adopted the petticoat “Ghagra” and the blouse “Choli”, which are pieces worn under the sari. In addition, as the British came to India, the fabric of saris changed from cotton to more expensive and rich fabrics, such as chiffon.

Natya Shastra, an ancient Indian treatise describing ancient dance and costumes, states that the navel of a woman is considered to be the source of life and creativity, hence the midriff is to be left bare by the sari.
The sari is very long, up to 9 yards, because it is like a long dress, described in the world longest epic, Mahabharata. The legend states that when a woman, Draupadi, was lost to an enemy clan, the victors caught one end of her sari and continued to pull and unravel, but could reach no end.

There are a few original saree patterns, each having a symbolic meaning behind the print:
Paisley: Symbol of fertility
Elephant: Symbol of water, royalty, fertility, and Ganesh (God of learning)
Rudraksha: Seed from a tree grown in the Himalaya’s and the eyes of Lord Shiva
Parrot: Symbol of courtship and passion
Fish: Symbol of abundance, food and wealth of children
Conch: Symbol of gods in the form of sound

A folktale explains one of the ways the saree was believed to originate:
"The Sari, it is said, was born on the loom of a fanciful weaver. He dreamt of Woman. The shimmer of her tears. The drape of her tumbling hair. The colors of her many moods. The softness of her touch. All these he wove together. He couldn't stop. He wove for many yards. And when he was done, the story goes, he sat back and smiled and smiled and smiled."

Today, there are several styles of saris depending on the location of India, however, the most popular are: Gujarati, Bengali, Tradtional, and Nivi style.
Sari has been unifying feature, despite the variations in its wearing style, in different parts of India. Although, it is fast disappearing garment for everyday wear, the sari will survive as a special occasion wear. More and more Indian women today prefer stitched garments and western wear of easy to maintain and wash and wear fabrics and yet there was a time when they rode horses wearing saris in Jhansi, UP and even swam in rivers and ponds with their saris tucked between the legs.
The origin of Sari dates back to the Indus valley civilization. They wore a single long cloth around their waist and pulled it through their legs to make a pant-like shape. This helped them in dancing and easy movement. The top was usually barely covered or left bare.
The main aspects of today’s saree, the blouse and the petticoat, have come very recently, with the arrival of Persian and British rulers.  If you would have seen the movie “Choker Bali,” there is a scene where Raima Sen, as a wife of a well-to-do Bengali gentleman, tries out the blouse for the first time. Aishwarya and many other characters in the movie are dressed in the traditional Bengali fashion .i.e. without a blouse and a petticoat.
